Nico Muhly has been universally hailed as one of the most consistently inventive composers of his generation. While he has demonstrated a unique voice and a staggering range of interests in classical music idioms - from symphonic to chamber works, choral music and ballet to a full-length opera (Two Boys) - he is just as well-respected for dissolving the boundaries between concert music and popular culture. Muhly has lent his talents as performer, arranger and conductor to Antony and the Johnsons, Bonnie “Prince” Billy, Björk, Doveman, Grizzly Bear, Jónsi of Sigur Rós Usher and fun. ; he’s also written acclaimed scores to The Reader and the forthcoming Kill Your Darlings, a biopic about the American Beat poets. In this illuminating master session, Muhly and Kill Your Darlings director John Krokidas will show clips from the movie and discuss how they approached setting the Beats to music. Muhly will also discuss how he carves out his own space in the music world, and what drives his boundless creativity.
